Liberalism and the End of Civilization

This is the way civilization ends – with both a bang and a series of prolonged whimpers.

The decline and fall of the Roman Empire stretched over centuries and included letting in barbarians on horseback, because the Romans had grown too indolent to defend their frontiers. What took centuries for Rome is taking decades for America, with or without a Republican in the White House.

Liberalism, the creed of our elites, is antithetical to common sense, public safety, decency and – ultimately – national survival. The multicultural mobs at our airports, screeching over Trump's efforts to keep America safe from terrorists posing as refugees, is only the most visible sign of suicidal liberalism at work.

Trump's moratorium on refugees from terror-rich lands has been met with fury and absurdity. The New York Times excoriates the move as "trashing American values." The Times is so charmingly insular that it naturally assumes its values – open borders, anti-assimilation and a refusal to confront terrorism – are America's values, a notion once again starkly refuted in the last election.

While inveighing against the executive order on the Senate floor, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had to choke back tears, so distraught was he at the possibility that Trump would keep out of the country the type of people who want to kill Jews like Chuck Schumer.

For the left, self-defense is un-American.

Most jihadist murder sprees were committed by Muslim refugees (like the Tsarnaev Boys and the wife and accomplice of San Bernardino shooter Syed Farook), or the children of immigrants from Allah-land (like Nidal Hasan and Omar Mateen – of the Fort Hood and the Pulse Nightclub massacres respectively). The 9/11 hijackers were here on temporary visas. The response of the Schumer gang? Let in more from terrorist strongholds without adequate vetting. Apparently, there hasn't been enough bloodletting to satisfy liberalism's lethal compassion.

While the Soros rent-a-mobs work overtime to keep the golden doors open to future mass murderers, the Mexican government-cum-drug-cartel is livid over the president's move to help secure our southern border. In response to Trump's order to begin the construction of a border wall, Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto fumes: "I regret and reject the decision of the United States to continue building a wall that, far from uniting, divides us."

Of course he does. For decades, Mexico has dumped its low-skill workers and career criminals on us. In return, it gets $27 billion in annual remittances. We get the crème de la crème of Mexican society, drugs... an expansion of the dependent class and the dissolution our national identity. ("Happy Cinco de Mayo" and "Press 1 for English.")

Even without open-borders and the adopt-a-foreign-terrorist program, the culture continues to unravel. Last month, Seattle became the first U.S. city to authorize so-called Supervised Injection Sites, where addicts can shoot–up heroin and other intravenous poisons in a friendly, welcoming environment, and abetted by trained nurses and physicians.

This is the latest innovation in what's called harm reduction, based on the theory that junkies will be junkies and there's a public-health mandate to facilitate their addiction. (Hell, it must be somewhere in the Constitution. Check with the ACLU.) This is the counterpart of giving condoms to preteens, because, don't you know, they're going to do it anyway. Society's sole responsibility here is to prevent the transmission of STDs, never mind what having sex at age 12 does to adolescent bodies and psyches.

Roughly 700 miles south of Seattle lies Tony Bennett's City by the Bay. If you go there on a warm day, with the wind blowing in the right direction, you could leave your heart and lose your lunch in San Francisco.

San Francisco's homeless are allowed to defecate and urinate in the streets. If a police officer witnesses one relieving himself in public, he can write a citation, providing toilet paper. Throwing a few bums (no pun intended) in jail would begin to solve the problem. But that would require taking a stand against the jungle. It's less of a hassle for the city to roll out porta potties.

After fighting the admission of homosexuals for more than a decade (and taking the matter to the Supreme Court, which upheld its right to freedom of association), the Boy Scouts of America just announced that it will accept the "transgendered" – girls who think they're boys. "Physically strong, mentally alert and morally straight" now includes embracing a genderless worldview where biology takes a backseat to ideology. Perhaps the Scouts will have merit badges for hormone therapy and sex-reassignment surgery.

Authentic human rights – the ability not to chose one's gender but to speak one's mind – are everywhere under assault. The hallmark of civilization, civility has been purged from academia. The campus left has gone from shouting down conservative speakers to attacking them with lead pipes.

The evening of February 1, a Trump supporter and Breitbart News editor was scheduled to speak at the University of California at Berkeley, home of the 60s Free Speech Movement.

An estimated 1,500 black-clad protestors wearing masks and armed with heavy pipes forced cancellation of the event. Even that didn't satisfy the goons. As night fell, they smashed windows, threw rocks at campus police, set fires and assaulted those who came to hear the speaker. No arrests were made and no disciplinary action was taken by the administration. (The media attributed the domestic terrorism to "a few dozen malcontents.")

As Al Capp used to say, the inmates are running the asylum.

Peter Wood, president of the National Association of Scholars, put in perspective the journey from the Free Speech to the No-Speech-for-You movements, explaining that the left "valued free speech only when it feared its views would not be heard. But now, having achieved supremacy on campus, it values no one else's speech. So we've now seen that domination on the left has turned into a regime of censorship enforced by violence."

Democrats are grabbing lead pipes to use on Neil Gorsuch, Trump's Supreme Court nominee. Gorsuch is accused of being a strict constructionist – one who believes words have objective meaning, and that we're a nation of laws not men who can twist words to achieve whatever outcome they choose. The liberals who currently control SCOTUS want to continue doing to the Constitution what the homeless are doing in the streets of San Francisco.

Civilization is difficult to define because it's made up of so many things: respect for the rights of others, the rule of law, a willingness to abide by the outcome of elections (even outcomes we abhor), and a refusal to embrace degeneracy, like public defecation and government facilitated addiction.

Although he may not fully understand the impact of his actions, Trump is trying to temporarily halt a process decades in the making. His opponents are just as determined to see American civilization (which they consider an oxymoron) continue hurtling toward the abyss.
